Part 3
Cleaning Up an Existing Website Using Topic Territory Strategy
Most companies are not starting from scratch. Their websites have evolved gradually over many years.
When we begin working with those companies, the first step is not creating new pages. The first step is mapping the existing territories.
We review every page and ask a simple question.
What topic does this page truly own?
Often the answer reveals several problems. Some pages attempt to cover multiple topics at once. Others overlap heavily with neighboring pages. Occasionally several pages attempt to explain exactly the same concept.
The goal of the cleanup process is to eliminate those overlaps.
Sometimes several pages are combined into a single stronger page. Other times a page is narrowed so it focuses on one specific problem instead of a broad category.
The process resembles cleaning up a map where territorial borders have become unclear.
Key Concept: Territory Overlap
Territory overlap occurs when multiple pages on a website attempt to explain the same topic or answer the same intent cluster. When this happens, search engines struggle to determine which page is authoritative, and the site’s visibility decreases.
Once territories are clear, search engines and AI systems begin interpreting the site much more confidently.
